Roads
A14
The A14 forms the road component of the UK’s premier freight corridor but is not expressway standard along its length. There are already 5,000 lorry movements out of Felixstowe per day, and the corridor is constrained at seven pinchpoints, the most notable at Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, the A14/A12 Copdock interchange and poor resilience at Orwell Bridge – Draft Transport East Strategy.).
A428
The A428 Improvement Scheme is to upgrade the route between the Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet roundabout with a new 10-mile dual carriageway and a number of junction improvements. The proposed scheme is estimated to cost between £810 to £950 million and will improve journeys between Milton Keynes and Cambridge, bringing communities together and supporting long term growth in the region – A428 Improvement Scheme.
A47
The A47 is the main east-west economic corridor in East Anglia. It links Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in the east with Norwich, King’s Lynn and Peterborough in the west. The A1 provides onward connections to the Midlands and north of England. We believe the full dualling of the A47 is vital – this work will be achieved in phases. Together with the A47 Alliance, Chambers are supporting and lobbying the business case for £260m+ of funding to dual the Acle Straight and the Tilney to East Winch section of the A47, near King’s Lynn, including the Hardwick flyover at present.
Cambridge Congestion Charge
Proposed Cambridge Congestion Charge – The Making Connections 2022 consultation is part of the GCP’s City Access programme to improve the way that people and vehicles move around the city, whilst reducing congestion and improving air quality.
Lower Thames Crossing
The proposed Lower Thames Crossing will almost double road capacity across the Thames east of London and ease congestion on the Dartford Crossing every year. The new road would improve journeys for millions of people every year.
Early analysis undertaken by KPMG in 2010 for Essex County Council suggests that the Lower Thames Crossing could contribute £12.7 billion to the local economy.
